In another retrospective on anime that have had a unique cultural impact in Canada, Dave Merrill joins me to gush about the legendary space pirate Captain Harlock. Under the localized title "Albator," the 1978 series was once a massive social phenomenon in French-speaking Canada. What made this show resonate so strongly with people? Is it worth checking out today? And... why is Harlock always rocking that Hugo Boss look? Give a listen to find out.

I lived in BC in the late 70s-early 80s. We only had 11 channels back then. I think 2 of them were French. One of them was channel 5. Back then TVs had a dial to switch channels. So to get from channel 6 from channel 3 you would have to change it to 5 a one point. One of those many times of channel switching i saw Albator playing on Channel 5. I didn't speak french but my young 8 year old self was immediately captivated. I watched it even though i couldn't understand a word. I loved that show. I couldn't figure out what it was called though. I would only catch it by accident time to time. Eventually forgot about as it probably wasn't being played anymore.
ReplyDeleteAround grade 10 (87?) i came across "vengeance of the space pirate", a dub of Arcadia of my youth. It immediately reminded me of my dormant memory of watching Albator in French when i was a boy. I was so happy. I bought it and loved it. Finally i knew stuff like that his name was Harlock. I still love Harlock to this day.
Another anime that i discovered from catching it on French TV was Cat's Eye. Finally after 30 years i got a copy of it. Though i would love to have a copy of the French version complete with the French cut opening. Super nostalgic. You should do an episode on Cat's eye.
You probably could not have stumbled on a better show purely by chance! I'll definitely be doing a Cat's Eye episode soon, hopefully early 2019. Also check out the Goldorak episode if you haven't already!
